This haiku was immediately appealing for the way it captures the present times. I can only imagine what inspired the poet to set down these words in 5-7-5. Clearly, it was more than just an exercise in writing about the season word for the week. She must have been thinking about something in the news. What I find most compelling is the poet’s upturned eyes. Gazing at the white billowing clouds, she imagines them as soft. “That’s what the world needs now!” must have been her next thought. “That kind of softness.” A simple, deeply heartfelt poem with strong contemporary cultural relevance.
